What are collagen peptides?

Collagen peptides are small pieces of collagen protein made by hydrolysis, a process that breaks long collagen fibers into shorter chains that mix more easily into water, coffee, or smoothies 1. The terms hydrolyzed collagen and collagen hydrolysate usually mean the same thing as collagen peptides 1.

Collagen is the main structural protein in skin, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, bone, and connective tissue. Type I collagen is common in skin, tendon, and bone; type II is common in cartilage; and type III is found in skin and blood vessels 7.

How are collagen peptides different from regular collagen?

Regular collagen is a large, tough protein. Collagen peptides are smaller fragments, which is why they dissolve better and are easier to use in powders and drinks 1.

After you swallow them, collagen peptides are digested into amino acids and small peptide fragments. Human studies have found collagen-derived peptides, including hydroxyproline-containing fragments, in the blood after collagen intake, which supports gut absorption 8.

Where do collagen peptides come from?

Most products come from bovine hides, marine fish skin or scales, or chicken sternal cartilage. These sources differ in collagen type, allergy concerns, taste, diet fit, and sustainability claims, but source alone does not guarantee better results 1 6.

What do collagen peptides do in the body?

Collagen peptides provide amino acids, especially glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline, that the body can use as building blocks 7 8. They may also act as small signaling peptides in skin, cartilage, and bone research, but this is still being studied 1 8.

Your body makes collagen on its own. Collagen production and collagen quality can change with age, ultraviolet light exposure, smoking, low protein intake, and some chronic diseases 7 9.

Vitamin C matters because it is a cofactor for enzymes that help form stable collagen fibers. Severe vitamin C deficiency causes scurvy, a disease marked by weak connective tissue and poor wound healing 9.

What are the benefits of collagen peptides?

Collagen peptides have been studied for skin hydration, skin elasticity, wrinkles, joint discomfort, bone density, body composition, and exercise recovery 1 2 3 4. Benefits are usually modest, evidence quality varies, and side effects such as digestive upset or allergy risk should be considered in the same decision 1 6.

Skin hydration, elasticity, and wrinkles

A 2021 systematic review and meta-analysis found that hydrolyzed collagen supplementation was associated with improved skin hydration and elasticity in randomized trials, with some studies using 2.5–10 g per day for 8–12 weeks 1. Reported side effects were generally mild, but trial methods and products differed, so individual results vary 1.

A randomized placebo-controlled trial by Proksch and colleagues reported improved skin elasticity after 8 weeks of specific collagen peptides in women ages 35–55 years 10. This does not mean collagen peptides reverse aging; it means one trial found a measurable skin-elasticity change under study conditions, with no serious adverse events reported in that trial 10.

Joint comfort and osteoarthritis

Collagen peptides and collagen derivatives have been investigated for joint discomfort and osteoarthritis 2. A meta-analysis reported small improvements in osteoarthritis symptoms with collagen derivatives, while noting differences among studies and the need for better trials 2.

In a 24-week randomized trial of athletes with activity-related joint pain, participants received 10 g collagen hydrolysate daily or placebo; the collagen group had improvements in some joint-pain measures 11. Individual results vary, and anyone with new, swollen, hot, unstable, or severe joint pain should seek medical evaluation rather than relying on supplements.

Bone density and postmenopausal health

Collagen peptides have been studied for postmenopausal bone measures, especially bone mineral density 3. In a randomized trial, postmenopausal women who received 5 g specific collagen peptides daily for 12 months had improved bone mineral density measures compared with placebo 3.

Bone health decisions should also consider calcium intake, vitamin D status, resistance training, fall risk, smoking, alcohol intake, fracture history, and prescription options when appropriate 12. Collagen can be part of nutrition research, but it should not replace guideline-based osteoporosis care 12.

Muscle mass, recovery, and exercise

Some trials have studied collagen peptides with resistance training. In one randomized trial in older men with sarcopenia, participants received 15 g collagen peptides daily during a 12-week resistance-training program and had greater gains in fat-free mass and strength than placebo 4.

That trial does not prove collagen is better than complete proteins such as whey, soy, eggs, or food protein for muscle building. Collagen is low in some essential amino acids, so people using it should still meet total protein needs from a balanced diet unless a clinician advises otherwise 7.

Hair and nails

Hair and nail claims are popular, but the evidence is thinner than for skin hydration and elasticity. A small open-label study reported nail-growth and brittleness changes after 24 weeks of collagen peptide use, but the design was not as strong as a large placebo-controlled trial 13.

Hair loss can be related to iron deficiency, thyroid disease, stress, medications, genetics, autoimmune disease, or hormonal changes. A clinician can help decide whether testing or treatment is needed rather than assuming collagen is the right answer.

How long does it take for collagen peptides to work?

Collagen peptides are usually studied over 8–24 weeks, depending on the outcome 1 10 11. Skin studies often look at 8–12 weeks, joint studies may run about 24 weeks, and bone studies may run 12 months or longer 1 3 10 11.

If a person notices a change, it is usually gradual. Faster changes in skin or pain can also come from hydration, sleep, training changes, weight change, placebo effects, or treatment of an underlying condition.

How much should you take, and when?

There is no FDA-approved collagen-peptide dose for treating any condition 5. In studies, collagen peptides have commonly been investigated at 2.5–15 g per day, depending on the product and outcome being studied 1 3 4 10 11.

For example, skin trials have studied 2.5–10 g per day for about 8–12 weeks, a bone trial studied 5 g per day for 12 months, an athlete joint-pain trial studied 10 g per day for 24 weeks, and a resistance-training trial studied 15 g per day for 12 weeks 1 3 4 10 11. These are study-attributed amounts, not instructions for your personal use.

Powder vs capsules

Powders make it easier to reach gram-level amounts used in many trials. Capsules may be more convenient, but serving sizes can require many capsules to match the amounts studied in research 1.

Best time to take collagen peptides

Trials vary in timing, and there is no proven best time for everyone. Consistency, total protein intake, and choosing a tested product likely matter more than morning versus night for most people 1 7.

Why vitamin C matters

Vitamin C helps the body form stable collagen fibers 9. Most people can get vitamin C from foods such as citrus, berries, peppers, broccoli, potatoes, and leafy greens, but people with restricted diets may need clinician guidance.

Are collagen peptides safe, and what are the downsides?
